Can practicing yoga strengthen working memory and improve mindful awareness? Discover what a study involving 43 adults, conducted by Devon Brunner and colleagues at Texas State University, reveals about the potential cognitive benefits of Hatha yoga, pranayama, and meditation.
Can yoga improve memory and cognitive function? Although yoga is widely associated with flexibility, relaxation, and physical well-being, emerging research suggests it may also support cognitive performance. A study published in PLOS ONE by Devon Brunner, Amitai Abramovitch, and Joseph Etherton from Texas State University investigated whether a brief Hatha yoga program could improve working memory and mindfulness.
What Did the Yoga Program Involve? The study included 43 adults who participated in six 60-minute Hatha yoga sessions combining physical postures, pranayama, and guided mindfulness meditation. Sessions incorporated traditional asanas such as Mountain Pose, Tree Pose, Warrior Pose, Downward-Facing Dog, Cobra Pose, and Child's Pose. Each session concluded with 10 minutes of guided mindfulness meditation emphasizing breath awareness and present-moment attention.
What Did the Researchers Discover? Following the yoga program, participants demonstrated statistically significant improvements in several working-memory measures, including tasks assessing information retention and mental manipulation. Mindfulness scores also improved. However, improvements in mindfulness were not significantly correlated with improvements in working memory. Interestingly, participants with previous yoga experience demonstrated greater improvement on one demanding working-memory task.
What Does This Mean for Yoga Practice? These findings suggest that combining yoga postures, mindful breathing, and meditation may offer potential cognitive benefits beyond physical fitness. However, because the study lacked a control group, further randomized controlled trials are needed to establish whether yoga directly causes these improvements.
Yoga may offer more than physical flexibility it may also have a role in supporting working memory and mindful awareness.
